Admired.com sells again on Flippa

The domain Admired.com sells on Flippa for $6166, that is $1066 more than it sold for two years ago. Surprisingly the first time the name sold it was also on Flippa.

The seller did mention that he had an idea for development but that it did not pan out after the primary investor backed out. The seller did try a few things but eventually just decided to sell the domain, the website he put up as a directory and a few other related domains were included in the sale.

The .net/org/info were included along with AdmireYou.com,AdmiredCompanies.com and MostAdmiredPeople.com.

Admired.com was regged in 2003.

Google shutting down Prizes.org

Google to retire prizes.org website.

Prizes.org sent out an email today:

We wanted to take a moment to thank our Prizes community for all of your support and provide a product update. Over the next six months, we will be retiring the Prizes.org product. By January 31, 2013, Prizes.org across platforms--on the web, Android or iOS--will no longer be supported.

We’re so grateful to all of you for your participation and engagement since we launched last year, but we have not seen the user adoption we would have liked. To provide advanced notice, we’ve put together some key information regarding timing, access to your account history, cashing out your remaining credits and more on our site.

Something to think about when everyone thinks it will be wonderful for Google to control new tlds and give them away for free. Google shuts down many projects and now I don't expect they would shut down a tld, they may change the pricing and usage.

WebmasterTalkForums.com sells for $31,000 on Flippa.

WebmasterTalkForums (WTF) is a huge Webmaster Forum with 81,512 threads, 329,877 posts and 72,384 members. It is 1 year and 10 months old. The forum has many active members who post regularly and earns income from BuySellAds and Google Adsense.

The site sold on Flippa for $31,000 with just two bids being made.

The site was established in August 2010.

Three month income average for the site was $966.

Frank Schilling: "Every major brand will have it’s own TLD in a decade"

Frank Schilling came out with a blog post that talked about Google and their interest in the new tld program. Frank laid out what plans Google might have if they win such extensions as .web.

What I thought was even more interesting than the post was his comments.  Frank is very good about putting his reply to a comment right in the same comment box and answering the commenter.

Frank made one comment that every major brand will have its own TLD in a decade. He went on to say that he did not know if .com will maintain its relevance in a .Anything world.

Another comment was this, "I have “Flipped” my view because this is different. We don’t live with 24 sh*tty .com alternatives anymore. There are going to be thousands of great ones. And all those people will be pushing in this direction. You can’t fight the tide."

I would say that what is being called shitty by Frank would be desired if they were brand new. Extensions like name,travel,biz,pro,info would all be considered great strings with several applicants for each.

Another interesting comment by Frank was this,  "When I first said that .com prices were $6.00 and there were 24 tlds — today we’ve got 1900 tld apps, com is $7.35 and climbing 7% every 4 of seven years. .com will be near $50 in 2050.. I think .com risks marginalizing itself as it ratchets up prices. I like .com a lot less in a World of $50 registrations and .WEB — which will likely be free. We have reached the high-water mark for .com."

I think its hard to say what the net will look like in 2020, any guesses on 2050 are just way out there.

Its not just Google that is tracking you

Violet Blue did a piece on Cnet about the results of a Berkeley study on web privacy. The study showed that the top 100 websites on the net are all tracking anything that clicks.

From the article:

Popular Web sites are far more aggressive in their consumer-tracking practices than most people suspect, according to the first report of UC Berkeley Law School's Web Privacy Census, and consumers are trapped in an escalating privacy crisis with limited control over their personal information.

The most interesting thing from my perspective was this:

The harms of online tracking are real and growing. This isn't about targeted advertising, like the ad industry wants everyone to believe. This is about the collection and use of your personal information in ways you can't even imagine.

Some of the real, demonstrated harms include price discrimination (the WSJ just covered how Orbitz targets Mac users with more expensive hotels), lowered credit scores and limits, denial of insurance coverage/more expensive coverage, lost job opportunities, identity theft, filter bubbles, censorship of speech and association due to fear of later repercussions, and erosion of the 4th Amendment right to privacy (particularly society's collective understanding of when an expectation of privacy is "reasonable" in the face of all this tracking).

The whole article is worth reading. I believe articles on privacy behavior like this, will be the reason why eventually all webmasters will have to do a lot more to protect their visitors' privacy.
