Moped.com covered on Tech Crunch, The seller told his story on Namepros

TechCrunch has an article today on Moped.com. Moped is being used the way Amazon branded itself with the business having nothing to do with the name.

Moped according to Tech Crunch :Moped is a private messaging platform that lets you send IM-like messages, but still with the useful hashtags and @s you find on Twitter. Users login via Twitter and message each other by @-ing recipient(s). It’s simpler than using an app like GroupMe for privately sharing in groups. It’s also integrated with Dropbox, so unlike other messaging or private sharing apps, users can share big files within their messages. A Chrome extension lets users to start conversations from a browser window.

The previous owner came to Namepros last year looking for advice.

I've been negotiating for almost a year with a start-up who want to buy moped.com, we've arrived at 35K, I'm a little ambivalent but in this market I think its probably realistic, I had a human appraisal at afternic and that came back at 30K, 35K represents an 8% yeild on its current parking revenue (which has been in delcine for the past 5 years), can I get some feedback from domainers on this price, any comments would be most welcome.

Members went on to give him advice and eventually he sold. This is an interesting story about a start up and their desire for one name, that it took over a year to get the  name and what its like when someone who is not Rick Schwartz or Frank Schilling owns a one word premium .com. The thought process is different when you need the money.

The other interesting part is that he owns Mopeds.com too. The start up only wanted Moped.com. I was especially interested as I own Moped.tv and Mopeds.tv, not in the same class but its nice to see where the .com sold to gauge where the market may be for an alt extension. There are obviously other variables but its nice to get whatever data on a domain that you can have.

The whole thread is worth reading imo as there were some really good comments made to the owner of Moped.com.

maybe its just me but I read the site title as the past tense of mope, thinking it was such a sad name for a brand. they out to at least have a logo with an image of a speeding moped or something.
