What has happened to Domaining ?

At the beginning of July there was a thread started on Namepros entitled, "What has happened to domaining?"

The thread has 84 posts and is a very entertaining read. There are some good points made about what has happened to the domainer to domainer market, the coming of the new tlds, and how end user sales are still good and that's all that matters.

One comment about perception by Alien 51 I thought was especially good.

DotCOM has become a platform, eventhough there are millions of spammers and scammers and fraudsters using .COM as well. Domainers invest on the "perception" that .COM is King. I don't think the Billions of mini-sites on .COM which they say here as "polluting the internet", adds to .COM's "credibility". Like also the fact that most "keyword domains" in .COM, have been hijacked by domainers and have tarnished the credibility of keyword domains. Nowadays, a websuser would trust "brandable" domains more, because they now have accumulated a "perception" from past experience, that keyword domains contain nothing but spin articles created by minisite makers.

New Tlds will have to deal with their reality vs perception, no doubt the marketing of these extension will enhance or take away from their credibility. Will just being featured on Go Daddy give an extension like .web for example, added credibility ? Read the thread here on Namepros.

What has happened is it has become diluted with people willing to sell domains for $20.

Flipping for the short view instead of seeing the big picture.

Development is king now. End users are not willing to pay more then a few hundred for local or small keywords anymore.

End-user's advisor's are now SEO and development firms which would rather see the dollars going to their company for development or SEO instead of domains.

Large corporates will continue to pick up strong keyword domains and pay large premiums for them. Basically, unless you are assisting with development, the market is extremely quiet right now. More TLD's will crush domaining further, the clock has struck midnight.
