The kind of domain sales that spur a good forum debate

This week had the kind of sales that spur arguements on domain forums. Two L-L-L.com sold for nice money,  E-C-S.com sold for $6,000 and G-N-S.com sold for $5,400. Both are very nice and very uncommon. E-C-S.com was initially registered in 1996.

I think its nice to be able to see how a trend started and then fizzles and then what it takes to get things perking up again.

Of course L-L-L.com names had been registered for years but it was not until a thread in 2007 that domainers really focused in on them.

The debate started between those who saw them as junk and those who saw them as another niche to find a good ROI.

Years ago I participated in the L-L-L.com  thread on Namepros and regged some L-L-L.com names. The wholesale price for LLL.com was at a high in the $6500 to $7000 range and the thought was that some buyers especially European might want the same three letters for a percentage of their LLL.com price. 

These names did pick up, as at one time there was a complete buyout of the L-L-L.com.

Another reason behind the L-L-L.com regs was the fact that a decent amount were developed, people would post names that were developed in the big thread.

I did have a couple that ended in T-V which I sold for a profit, I did pay $99 for a couple at Namejet as these names were all getting backordered then, I think I bought B-U-B.com and P-C-A.com they were both aged, but after a few renewals and the wholesale price of LLL.com coming down I let them drop. I also owned V-V-V.com figuring only 26 exist, that sold for an ok price but still not as much as I paid for the name. I did not register many and thought it was worth a speculation and it was interesting to be there at the beginning of a niche. Not going crazy and regging a lot is the key. You never know what will sell and taking a small bet was fine IMO. The community of people participating at Namepros was cool, people tried to help one another with info on potential end users and every sale was posted.

Surprisingly a lot of L-L-L domains are registered in net and org too. If you look at G-C-S it is registered com/net/org/biz/info/us.  There are a decent number of .de registered and developed.

These sales for L-L-L .com are still few and far between. The thread has been very inactive this year. There will probably be a little more talk about them this week and that may get some newer domainers to jump in. Just remember these are highly speculative and read the thread and see how the L-L-L.com idea started and what the mood has been over the years.

Interesting, where was E-C-S.com sold at?

It's a domain that expired and dropped, did it really sell for $6k only to be parked?

I've an actual 1996 L-L-L .com, never dropped.
