Australia cc tld hits the 2.5 million mark

Aussie Country Code hits 2.5 million registrations

The latest figures released by auDA and AusRegistry show continued growth in registration numbers has pushed the total number of .au domain names over 2.5 million.

Since passing 2 million registrations in March 2011, the .au namespace has grown at a steady pace thanks to the combined efforts of accredited registrars in promoting .au as Australia’s home on the Internet. Approximately 86% of all .au domain names are registered under .com.au.

The milestone places .au in the top 10 largest country codes in the world and is a testament to the strength and stability of the namespace and its value to the Australian community.

Australian domain names (using ‘.au’) contributed $474.7 million to the economy last financial year, according to a new report from Deloitte Access Economics.

Deloitte’s probe found that 60,000 new domain names are being registered each month, compared to just 6,552 back in December 2002. The sector employs 4,330 people in full-time work, and pays out $275.7 million each year in wages.

Back in August of 2011, there were 2.18 million domain names registered in Australia. The most popular type of domain was .com.au, with 85% of registrations, followed by .net.au with 10.99% and .org.au with 2.33%, with minor extension types making up the remainder.

InvestmentProperty.com.au left to expire and sells for record price

The record for the most expensive .com.au domain name was broken today after the owner of investmentproperty.com.au let the name expire and it was snapped up at auction for $125,000.

Mark Lye, CEO of Netfleet, the domain name aftermarket where the name was sold, said the final price was “quite exceptional” but the previous owners who let it expire would be “kicking themselves”.

“It's a schoolboy error really for a domain of that value to not renew it in time,” he said.
