Go Daddy April 2013 Domain Market Report

Sales in April took a dip on Go Daddy Auctions with a 9 % month over month drop off in sales. Total sales for April were 39,488 vs 43,409 in March.

The top sale was Seeq.com for $33,000, that name was also reported sold on Afternic this week in their weekly sales report.

Go Daddy Auctions Tip To Try To Get More Views

If you are thinking about auctioning some names on Go Daddy using the 7 day public auction, first take a look at popular auctions that have around 7 days left, that already have some bids, the more the better. Maybe you own the plural of the singular that is expiring, maybe you own another extension, such as the .com and the .net is getting action. Owning the .net with the .com expiring does not work as the .net is the inferior extension.  Maybe it is a color/noun such as pinkcow.com and you own pinkbear.com. You can always use a reserve if you want to make sure you get a certain price, that will cost you $4.99 when setting up the auction. A few friends have had some success with this strategy, and to be fair you really need some things to align so that it makes sense, but I would say if you search the auctions and look at what is about seven days out and see a similar name you were thinking about auctioning anyway, this might provide a visibility boost. Do not use this strategy in a nefarious way using any fake bidders or traffic.

There is an interesting auction taking place right now that is employing this strategy although not sure the numbers match up. I can say I meant to write this article a month ago and then seeing this today got me to stop procratinating.

Nofec.org is expired, 12 year old domain that was a developed site. Nofec.net was registered on April 19 while the auction started for the .org. Somehow this name seems to have a lot of traffic already which seems like it cannot be real. Nofec.net has a reserve which has not been met that is really quite interesting for a two day old handreg.

Go Daddy Changes Auction Extension Time Again

Yesterday we covered some changes to Go Daddy Auctions.

After a lot of people voicing their displeasure with Go Daddy extending auctions by 10 minutes, the auction site seems to be running today off of a 5 minute extension.  Paul Nicks confirmed with me that they moved it back to 5 minutes this morning.

I think this is a tricky spot for Go Daddy where their core auction users love 2 minutes and those who get busy at their job would like more than 2 minutes.

Of course Go Daddy ran .info and .org auctions that extended by one hour. So for now its 5 minutes.

A Few Changes To Go Daddy Auctions

Go Daddy Auction Changes

Today Go Daddy changed the time increments for bidding on their auctions. Auctions now will extend 10 minutes for bids placed in the last 10 minutes. I spoke to Paul Nicks at Go Daddy today and he said they wanted to improve the bidder experience and give them more than 2 minutes to get their bids in.

You may also notice that when you have a name on your watch list and click through to see the data after it closes its no longer there. We always pasted the names in our Daily Sales Recap so that you can see things like traffic, age and the bidding history.

Now when you click through that data is no longer kept, you will see the following: We're sorry, but the domain name you are looking for is no longer available through auction.

Try searching for another domain name.

Paul Nicks said this was done for data storing reasons and not having to store all those past auctions allowed for faster loading times in your watch history.

I also asked Paul what Go Daddy did about non paying bidders, since last week we had the talk about naming and shaming with a deadbeat Sedo buyer. Paul said that Go Daddy closes the membership of the deadbeat buyer and that after that the seller is on their own to go after payment.

luxurycityhotels.com 12 year old domain Go Daddy shows Traffic of 537. Hotels related names do well especially Geo related with Dublinhotels.com selling last week for $38,000. This is not that kind of quality but will still see a decent price.

photomap.com 14 year old domain, with so many photo apps and websites this seems like a nice brand name.

4jv.com 14 year old domain, good liquidity for 3 character.coms just don't overpay in a bidding war.

virtualidentification.com 11 year old domain, as more people write about your identity online and how to both protect it and monetize it, this name could be the right name for a tech company or start up down the road.

techninja.com 13 year old domain. Doing a Google search shows you just how many companies out there are using something close to this name with a suffix or prefix added on.

anysocial.com 6 year old domain. A good name for a start up in the social media field.

beerwars.com 13 year old domain. There are so many shows on TV using this naming scheme. CupcakeWars, Storage Wars, Property Wars to name a few, I sold HostingWars.com last year for high xxx and currently own RegistrarWars.com which would make for a nice battle of the registrars website or pay per view. qualityinc.com 13 year old domain, I like this one as it is a positive name for a company, and promotes quality.

beginnerblogger.com 6 year old domain, Go Daddy showing traffic of 139. I like this name as a development name introducing new people to blogging, wordpress, premium themes, if you like teaching people something new and making money through affiliate programs and subscription this may be the right name if you are an expert when it comes to blogging. Auction ends 2:38pm Eastern Time.

summerknight.com 14 year old domain, sounds like the character name for a female in a movie or video game. I like the branding aspects and the play on night/knight. No its not a name you buy and turn around and flip for a huge ROI but it could be a cheap acquisition that the right buyer comes along and you do very well. Auction ends 12:28pm Eastern Time.

thetrain.org 11 year old domain, Go Daddy showing traffic of 191, I just like this one and if bought on the cheap can see it having plenty of room to make profit on a resale. Auction ends 3:57pm Eastern Time.

gameteaser.com 13 year old domain, not a bad brandable for a gaming site, think games that are a brain teaser like on Lumosity.com. Auction ends 1:03pm Eastern Time.

Woolston.com 14 year old domain. A suburb in both the UK and New Zealand. Auction ends 3:42pm Eastern Time.

GovenmentHomes.com valued at $99,654 ? Go Daddy Says So

Go Daddy puts values on domains that generate ppc while parked and expired and these usually get a lot of attention. Today there are some of the biggest valuations seen on the site. The interesting part is that all 5 expired names are owned by the same company Relevad Corporation.

From the Relevad website:

So are they just watching these auctions and will renew ?

Are these traffic numbers remotely close ?

Should Go Daddy provide transparency and upload ppc stats when putting such large valuations ?

These valuations are sure to bring newbies out of the woodwork thinking they are getting one heck of a deal.

Go Daddy March 2013 Auction Report

DreamProducts.com was the top sale for the month at $40,000. Dream Products is a leading direct-to-consumer catalog and ecommerce site specializing in providing unique items at affordable prices.

The domain currently redirects to DreamProductsCatalog.com. So its clear that seven characters shorter and the pure play domain for their name was worth $40,000.

Go Daddy had a strong March with sales volume up almost 22%. Go Daddy Auctions sold 42,660 domains in March vs 34,985 in February.

crushtv.com 13 year old domain, I like this one and it also has a bit of traffic. Have bought and sold many of these tv.com related domains. Worth speculating just don't go crazy and get caught in a bidding war.

jvtv.com second time I have seen this on Go Daddy auction, its public not expired. I love these 4 letter ending in TV have sold over 100 of them in net and org. Not sure what the reserve is and it might just be priced too high. JNTV.com sold for $5000 this time last year on Go Daddy.

tlkr.com 5 year old domain, Talker without the vowels will get a little play because of that.

savesupply.com 13 year old domain, traffic 102 might be worth a spec.

designerbags1.com this is a pure speculative play, one bid at $10, Go Daddy shows healthy traffic, we know sometimes these numbers don't translate once you own them. These names I think are worth speculating on sub $50, when they get into bidding wars its best to avoid, but worth a cheap play to see if the traffic is real. DesignerBags are a high ticket item and the 1 is not the worst branding vehicle even if it is not great.
